Overgrazing narratives

Last week I wrote a letter to editor of the NRC, a daily newspaper in the Netherlands, in response to an article in the Science Section that described a hydrological model of atmospheric moisture recycling over continents (Regen komt vaak uit Verre Landen, Marcel aan de Brugh, zaterdag 6 september 2014, W7). In the article, it is reported, as a matter of fact, that livestock are overgrazing the grasslands in East Africa. In my response I argued that pastoralists have been evicted from the grasslands that they "cultivated" and that, if there is overgrazing it is a political problem, not a natural consequence of pastoralism.
