Dr. Elizabeth Gardiner in the field.

Dr. Elizabeth Gardiner successfully defended her dissertation Land Privatization, Tenure Security, and Food Security in Rural Burkina Faso on Monday 17 August. The dissertation is based on ethnographic fieldwork in southwest Burkina Faso and examines how the property relations in three rural villages shape the process of land privatization that is pushed by the World Bank and other international organizations. Dr. Gardiner finds that legal land title is neither necessary or sufficient for tenure security and that instead the Chef du Terre continues to play a critical role in the land tenure system in rural Burkina Faso.
