Our article Can One Animal Represent an Entire Herd? Modeling Pastoral Mobility Using GPS/GIS Technology has been published online first in Human Ecology. In the article we examine whether tracking one animal with GPS is a valid way to represent an entire herd. The answer is yes. We also describe the social dynamics of cattle herds -- including dominance hierarchies, leadership roles and licking friendships -- and how these might affect the results of GPS tracking studies.
